Event Details

Several European Business Chambers, in collaboration with Mazars, will host an interactive panel discussion around the theme of combating corruption in South Africa.


This year, the world is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention against corruption (UNCAC). While commemorating this milestone, the event will aim at raising awareness on UNCAC and on discussing business integrity and the role of the private sector in preventing and countering corruption.


In the panel, we will host the following speakers:

  • Dr Achieng Ojwang - United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), South Africa Chapter
  • Ms Sonia Giuricich - Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa

  • Ms Mosilo Mothepu - the Trillian Whistleblower and author of "Uncaptured: the true account of the Nenegate/Trilian Whistleblower"
  • Mr Kris Dobie - Senior Manager at the Ethics Institute (TEI)

    Director Public Sector of Mazars

    Ishan has over 15 years of assurance experience. Prior to joining Mazars, he was the Chief Audit Executive (Designate) for Assurance and Forensic at a large SOC. He was accountable for Internal Audit, Technical Audit, Technical Investigations and Forensic Investigations for the organization. As part of his role, he was an official of the Board Audit and Risk Committee and EXCO. Through his role, he has worked with the Special Investigating Unit (‘SIU’), the National Prosecuting Authority (‘NPA’) and other organisations mandated to fight and prosecute corruption.
    Ishan has previously served on the Gauteng Regional Committee of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), as well as the Technical Committee of the IIA, and has extensive knowledge of governance, risks and controls.
    His knowledge and experience is focused on assisting organisations with implementing robust enterprise risk management and advising numerous Boards on ‘fit-for-purpose governance’.

    Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer (Anti-Corruption) at United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

    Maria Adomeit has 18 years of experience in crime prevention and criminal justice issues, with a particular focus on anti-corruption and economic crimes.
    Currently, she is currently coordinating the anti-corruption work of UNODC Regional Office for Southern Africa. She also leads UNODC global work on corruption risk assessment and management within public institutions as well as work on corruption related to crimes that have an impact on the environment and corruption in the health sector.

    Executive Director of United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), South Africa Chapter

    Dr Achieng Ojwang is the Executive Director of Global Compact network South Africa, a position she has held since April 2018. During this time, Dr Ojwang has re-established the Network as a formidable independent organisation and continues to raise the visibility of the UN Global Compact brand in South Africa.
    A Sustainability Professional, she has over 20 years of experience both in academic research and actual support to companies on corporate sustainability.
    Dr Ojwang holds a Doctorate degree in Development Studies from Radboud University in the Netherlands and a Master of Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

    For the last 19 years she has managed an Accounting, Tax and Company Secretarial practice, which has some large clients. She is a PPG member and the Chair of the Finance and Risk Committee of the Institute. She worked at Anglo American for 6 years and at Total SA for 3 years in accounting and internal auditing.

    CEO of Organisation for Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA)

    Wayne was a founding director and chairperson of OUTA in 2012, which set out to pursue civil society’s challenge of Governments irrational eToll decision in Gauteng.
    Since 2016, OUTA had expanded its mandate and escalated the Non-Profit entity to become a formidable civil activist organisation, employing a team of around 45 professionals and activists that have taken on over 250 projects, related to irrational policy decisions, corruption and maladministration of tax-payers money.

    PANELIST - Mosilo Mothepu

    Whistleblower

    Mosilo Mothepu has sixteen years’ experience in the financial services industry.
    She worked on several key infrastructure projects, including raising capital for the Airports Company of South Africa in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
    Like many whistleblowers, she is currently unemployed, but continues to use her voice to fight for justice and dignity for her fellow South Africans.
    She is a respected speaker on the topics of ethic leadership and motivation, and well as women and corporate governance.
    Mothepu was named a Daily Maverick South African Person of the Year in 2017 and won the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation’s Reconciliation Award in 2018.
    She is the whistleblower behind the Nenegate/Trillian Gupta linked affair.

    Senior Manager for Organisational Ethics at The Ethics Institute (TEI)

    Kris has been involved in organisational ethics since 2004, and has a special interest in corruption prevention and conflicts of interest. Over the years he has supported the South African Government with numerous policy projects, including the development of the Minimum Anti-Corruption Capacity Guidance, and the 2016 South African Local Government Anti-Corruption Strategy.
    Kris has initiated and led the Gauteng Municipal Integrity Project, and the Local Government Ethical Leadership Initiative. He is the lead researcher on the South African Citizens’ Bribery Survey, as well as the Public Sector Ethics Survey. He co-authored the TEI Ethics Reporting Handbook in 2015, and 2022.
    He served on the Global Reporting Initiative’s anti-corruption working group for the review of the ethics and anti-corruption reporting guidelines for the GRI’s G4 reporting standard, and recently served on the National Anti-Corruption Strategy Reference Group.
    He holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pretoria, as well as MPhil in Workplace Ethics (Cum Laude) from the same institution.
