"Europe's Economic and International Woes: Risks and Opportunities for South Africa"


Prof. Thomashausen will discuss the key challenges faced by the EU and its member states in 2024, including the economic recession, sustained Ukraine support, banking risk of confiscations of Russian deposits, migration, negative population growth, the explosion of energy costs, loss of market globalisation, de-industrialisation and the rise of right wing populism.


He will also demonstrate the most important economic growth opportunities in South Africa and identify the causes of declining direct foreign investment and employment, as well as the areas where European interests and demand can be matched to supplies available in South Africa.

    Professor André Thomashausen

    UNISA Professor Emeritus of International Law

    Prof. Thomashausen is Professor Emeritus of International Law and former Director of the Institute of Foreign and Comparative Law at UNISA. He is an Attorney in Germany and a retired legal academic of 40 years standing.
    He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea, he served as the Special Advisor to the Head of the UN mission in Mozambique, UNOMOZ, from 1993 to 1995, and he is the principal author of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Treaty.
    He has published widely on international and constitutional law in English, German, French, Portuguese, Turkish and Mandarin.
    Prof. Thomashausen is also a sworn court translator in Germany, South Africa and Mozambique for German, English, French and Portuguese.
