"Status and Prospects of South Africa's Electricity Sector"
South Africa faces a persistent electricity supply crisis that is marked by frequent power supply disruptions, and an urgent need to undertake decarbonization efforts. The frequency and duration of load-shedding have significantly increased over the past decade, from 2 to 12 hours per day, and the period during which these outages occur has expanded from one month to nine months per year. Load-shedding has a detrimental impact on productivity, investment, and economic growth, further limiting South Africa's potential. Critically underpinning this crisis are, among other things, an aging thermal power plant infrastructure in urgent need of replacement, incomplete sector reforms, and underinvestment in new and renewable energy.
Recent regulatory changes aimed at liberalizing and decarbonizing the sector have created new opportunities for businesses to undertake innovative investments and resolve the electricity crisis. Dr. Mundia Kabinga will showcase ongoing research in the South African electricity sector and its future prospects while emphasizing the available business opportunities.
